Under The Wing:
Initiative
by Jacob York
March 19, 2021
Initiative: Dave has cancer. It’s aggressive and terrifying. As he looks back at his life he thinks back to his fond memories of playing Dungeons and Dragons with his close group of friends. But when Dave looks back, he doesn’t remember sitting around a table playing a game – He remembers every cast spell, enemy vanquished, and cataloged item. His new quest? Play through “memories” he might miss before the cancer takes him. If all goes well, Dave will get a chance to experience a life not yet lived. The path to victory is clear, but a mysterious Shade lurks in the game, threatening to block his success at every turn.
UTW: Under the Wing is a developmental residency program for Flying V company members to stretch their wings. The goal of the program is to offer company members the opportunity to propose and lead projects without the pressure of needing to produce at the mainstage level. This is an exploratory space, one in which you set your own goals, assemble your own team, and explore themes, ideas, and roles in a supportive environment.
Initiative was originally a part of The Seedling Project’s “Winter Works” series on February 1st, 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia. Winner of The Y.E.S. Festival at Northern Kentucky University, it received its collegiate premiere on April 4th, 2019 in Highland Heights, Kentucky. Initiative was developed in cooperation with Woven Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee with a workshop production premiering on September 13th, 2019 under the direction of Sam Lowry.
