STATIC: NOISE OF A NEW MUSICAL

Flying V presents a workshop performance of Static: Noise of a New Musical, the 2022 Capital Fringe Best Musical winner by teenage playwright and composer, Tess Rowan. Static takes place on the Appalachian trail and heavily features morse code into the story of a teenager using her radio, her songs, and her intuition to figure out what happened to her missing father. Flying V has worked with Tess to develop the concept, music, and script from last year’s Fringe, and will present a staged reading of Static with a live band for two nights in August.
Static is an original adventure musical with a radio blend of musical theater, rock, folk, and immersive morse code clues. We invite you to join us for the next phase in this story’s development!

Tess ROWAN
Playwright, Composer
Tess Rowan is an 18-year-old trained screen and stage performer, as well as playwright, composer, and director. She is based in Washington D.C. and has performed in venues from Atlanta to New York.
From dancing to singing to acting, from backstage to behind the scenes on set to a rehearsal studio, Tess loves being a part of creative productions.
As a current high school student, Tess is the Co-Founder, Co-Captain, and Head of Social Media/Marketing for After Hours (playwriting, directing, and student-run productions group), Lead Critic on the Cappies Critic Team (theater criticism for DC Area educational theater), Co-Captain and Head of Social Media/Marketing for Assembly Required (Improv Troupe), and the Vice President of her school’s chapter of the International Thespian Society.

Tess Rowan began writing Static in eighth grade at 14 years old.
In 2020, she began @staticmusical on social media and shared her original music publicly for the first time. Shortly after winning the first-ever WTOP Top Kid Award for her work on Static during the COVID-19 pandemic, Tess began fundraising and also created two virtual #staticsingers and #staticsingersreprise musical theater TikTok contests. Additionally, Tess performed Static in multiple international virtual charity concerts, such as Save the Arts and Lockdown Live.
Static was featured in Thornhill Theatre Space’s New Musical November showcase. “Whatta World” (2021) and “Tell Me How” (2022) from Static: Noise of a New Musical are available on all musical streaming platforms. In July 2022, Tess Rowan directed the world premiere of Static in the 17th year of the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, DC, where the production won “Best of Fringe: Musical”.
