This past summer, Flying V stepped away from production (and large scale public communication – nostra culpa!) to figure out how we could be better. Better arts creators. Better community members. A better place for diving into all those weird little moments that make us human. (You can read more about how that journey started, and the things we’ve been working on here.)
One of the things we focused on was how to get more people involved in how we make decisions – artistic and operational. We explored concepts of arts collectives, and talked with some specialists and experts about truly incorporating diverse viewpoints into how we approach creation. We also took some time to review all our policies and procedures – everything from our Code of Conduct to the ways we start a rehearsal process.
We finally feel like we’re in a place to make some art again. Which means we’re ready for some new Artistic Leadership. Last July, the Flying V Board of Directors dissolved the position of Producing Artistic Director. Now, we replace it with something BIGGER (and better).
- Build a more stable baseline of organizational capacity.
- Promote both transparency and creativity – while also opening communication pathways.
- Help us to be more attuned to the community we serve by providing more ears for listening, more spaces for conversation, and more people with different life experiences at the helm of the ship.
How does that even work? You all do so much! (That’s true, but it’s allllll interconnected!)
We have three main artistic focus areas at Flying V (Fights, Digital Media, and Theatre) and while they COULD all function separately – we don’t want them to! Click the diagram below to explore how we see the work of each of our Artistic Leads overlapping and supporting one another, as well as the artistic vision and mission of the organization.
Right now, we’ve got Leadership hired for two of these areas, and the third, Theatre, is in process – with an announcement date likely in mid-January.
You may remember Joey and Tim from their in-the-ring wrestling beef in FVF:PW. Now they’re teaming up to lead Flying V Fights and get creative about what kind of stories Flying V can tell in and out of their squared circle.
navi has been a long-time Flying V creative powerhouse, and we’re excited to bring them into leadership as head of Digital Media (R&D) – they’ve been off to the races with new ideas for Paperless Pulp, but also all the other ways Flying V can spin meaningful tales in digital spaces.
All of these folks have already hit the ground running with big and small ideas for how Flying V can continue to create high impact artwork based around deeply human moments. And pop culture fans have nothing to fear. If you couldn’t tell by Ghostbat’s rad monster artwork, we’ll be sticking with our toolbox of modern and modernized mythologies.
More things coming soon, but we just couldn’t hold this announcement in any longer.
If you have questions or comments, feel free to send them our way!
