We’re one week from the New York Neo-Futurist’s visit (if you don’t have your tickets yet you def wanna do that) and we’ve been thinking about the number of reasons we wanted to bring the Neo’s back down to the DMV. The largest reason is that there is nothing like a Neo’s show. They are timely, relevant, personal, irreverent, usually hilarious, and often creative-whiplash-inducing, devised works that center the artists as storytellers, performers, and producers. In their specifically Neo’s way (30 plays in 60 minutes?!) they hit all the reasons that devised theatre is an amazing (and under-produced) style of work.
Flying V is a long-time devotee of devised theater and new works creation, as well as the intentional honoring of the personhood and lived experience of artists in creation. So, for us, the matchup of the Neos and Flying V was obvious.
What is devised theatre, though, and why do we love it so much? And why should audiences give it a chance? We made an infographic! (Cause this is 2022, y’all).
Wanna see some super unique devised work? Come to see the Neo’s Infinite Wrench August 26th! And then stay tuned for Flying V’s devised fall production: Monstress, coming in October!
