As Flying V draws closer to the opening of our latest devised work Crystal Creek Motel, eagle-eyed fans may notice the poster’s art is a bit of a departure from our previous posters, while still maintaining a look and feel that feels true to our aesthetic! This couldn’t be possible without the amazing skills of Monica Gallagher, whose hand-drawn artwork has graced our postcards numerous times!

We caught up with her and asked her a few questions…

Hi Monica! Everyone here at the Nest is digging the artwork! What was your inspiration?

It was a combination of LOVING any creepy story involving an inn or a motel (The Shining, Agatha Christie, and I just watched Bad Times at the El Royale) and old school Christopher Pike books that I was obsessed with when I was a pre-teen — which are all about teens plotting to murder one another, haha. Creepy and vintage but still having that slant of 80’s/90’s kitsch.

What’s it like being a comic book artist creating art for a theater company?

It’s awesome, it’s always a fun challenge! With comics, most of the time my focus is on crafting a story visually over several pages, whereas here I get to use different styles, design, composition, and typography in order to do ONE image that best portrays the story you all have created.

What else would you like to plug? Where else can people find you?

I have an ongoing weekly comic called Assassin Roommate over on Webtoon (it’s about assassins who make out with one another) and you can find all of my previous books on my website at eatyourlipstick.com. Thank you!

Flying V’s Crystal Creek Motel runs from October 10th through November 2nd at The Silver Spring Black Box. Book your reservation now!
